have the ability to climb down trees head first, unlike woodpeckers, which can only move upwards. Nuthatches are omnivorous, eating mostly insects, nuts and seeds. They have the habit of wedging nuts or other food items in a crevice and then hacking at it with a strong bill, which gives this group its English name. Most species are resident, but the Red-breasted Nuthatch
migrates from the north of its range.
